Why do oil prices remain so stable when global oil prices are falling?

Since May 2022, the central government and several states have reduced VAT and excise duty, bringing relief to consumers.Even though the rates of Brent crude oil are going up and down due to global tensions, these changes are rare in India. This policy is in the interest of the common people, which gives them time to breathe in times of inflation.

How are fuel prices determined?

Fuel prices are dependent on several factors.Let’s take a look at each:

  • Crude oil sports: Petrol and diesel are mostly made from crude oil.If the supply chain in the Middle East or the US deteriorates, prices go up.
  • Rupee vs dollar: India imports 85 per cent of its oil.If the rupee weakens, imports become expensive, and eventually put a burden on our pockets.

Central and state taxes make up for more than 50 per cent of the value added tax. That is why the prices are higher in Mumbai than Delhi.

  • Refining cost: It is not easy to make petrol and diesel by refining crude oil.Cost depends on the quality and technology of the refinery.
  • Demand-supply balance: If cars run more during the festive season or summer vacation, then the demand increases and the rates can go up a bit.

These factors together determine how much it will cost to fill your car’s tank.
