Gurugram Pollution: Toxic Gases from Bandhwari Dump Push Gurugram Toward Health Crisis

Haryana News: The air in Gurugram has reached dangerous levels yet again. Smog and dust envelope the city without a break between October and February. In fact, this week, a choking AQI of 223 was recorded, which can be serious enough to cause health hazards.
The administration has taken some measures, such as sprinkling water on the roads daily and imposing fines on vehicles, but these acts are providing only temporary relief. The real cause of this menace lies in the widespread chaos of the city, inadequate sanitation, and poor management of garbage.
The sanitation system is in shambles, while dust and garbage are both a growing menace
As per the municipal corporation data, only 65 to 70 percent of the daily waste generated is collected. The remaining 30 percent stays on roads, drains, and vacant land, further contributing to dust and pollution. At many places, mechanical sweepers are out of order or not working at all.
Cleanliness in the colonies is merely nominal
Spraying on the roads is confined to the main roads only. Because of improper sanitation in the interior areas and colonies, the dust at those places starts piling up again. Rules are also being flouted at construction sites.
Builders store building construction material in the open without covering them. In addition, there is no dust control and anti-smog equipment installed.
Bandhwari Landfill Becomes Gas Poison
At the Bandhwari garbage dumping site, about 1.4 million tons of garbage is rotting and emitting toxic gases. Crores of rupees are paid every year to cleaning agencies, but results are not seen on the ground. This negligence has become a major threat to the health of citizens.
Four monitoring stations are not enough for the entire city
But Gurugram, with about 4 million people, has a total of only four air monitoring stations. This is an extremely low number for such a huge population. But the question arises—why, with such a great budget and resources, is the air quality not getting any better?
